Sustainability and Flood Mitigation Advisory Board
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Board assists the City Commission to Identify and recommend affordable strategies associated with resource and ecosystem conservation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency; Research environmentally sound practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money, energy, and resources; Promote the use of methods, systems, and materials that do not deplete natural land, water, and energy resources or harm natural cycles (i.e. the carbon cycle, water cycle, etc.); Research financial initiatives and resources to offset costs such as grants and cost savings; Monitor the progress of approved initiatives and identify and address stumbling blocks to their implementation, to ensure that sustainability benefits are achieved in a reasonable time frame; Identify and make recommendations with regards to goals, criteria, strategies, and Green Building standards for the City for green building design, including energy and water efficient construction, consistent with the standards propounded by the Florida Building Code, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), the U.S. Green Building council (USGBC), and other leading groups setting forth standards on economic sustainability; Educate and engage the public in efforts to make the City of Hallandale Beach, including residents, businesses and institutions, more sustainable and resilient; Assist with reviewing and updating the City’s Floodplain Management and Hazard Mitigation Plan and other related plan.
*The board shall consist of seven (7) members appointed by the Commission-at-large with two (2) of the members being under the age of 18. The following qualifications will be taken into consideration in determining the composition of the board and supersede the general advisory board qualifications only to the extent that they contradict: Non-residents may be appointed to the board, but any members not residing in the City must own a business within the City, be employed full-time within the City, or attend a school full-time in the City. At least four members must be residents of the City. Members should have experience in the field of sustainability (resource conservation, smart growth/land planning, waste reduction, transportation, energy efficiency and renewable energy, green building, food security, resiliency or community outreach) or a genuine desire to delve into sustainability topics if limited in experience. At least one or more members must have a certification or credential equivalent to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Board members must be motivated and have a high level of interest in helping move the City in a sustainable direction. Board members should be representative of the diverse neighborhoods within Hallandale Beach.
